Two very different regions
Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas draw almost all their water from Lake Mead, and it is very hard. Tanks there need flushing about every six months and tankless units frequent descaling, and water softeners are common. Reno and Sparks draw mainly from the Truckee River, fed by Sierra snowmelt, which is much softer. Northern Nevada winters bring cold incoming water and freezing nights that Las Vegas rarely sees.
Licensing, permits and costs
Nevada licenses contractors through the Nevada State Contractors Board. Permits come from city building departments or, in unincorporated areas such as much of the Las Vegas Valley, from the county. Nevada repair calls mostly land between $150 and $650, and a 40 to 50 gallon gas tank swap commonly runs $1,400 to $3,000 installed. See water heater replacement for details.
