Hard water statewide
Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville, Carmel, Fishers and most other Indiana cities deliver hard water, whether it comes from rivers, reservoirs or wells. Tanks build sediment quickly, electric elements scale over, and tankless units need descaling at least yearly. Water softeners are common, and they pay off in heater life. Homes on softened water should check the anode rod more often.
Basements, crawlspaces and winter
Older Indiana homes usually have basements with the heater beside the furnace. Many post-war and newer homes sit on crawlspaces or slabs with the heater in a utility room or garage. In January, incoming water near 40°F slows recovery, so undersized tanks show their limits in winter.
Licensing, permits and costs
Indiana licenses plumbers through the Indiana Plumbing Commission. Local building departments issue permits for water heater replacement, such as Indianapolis's Department of Business and Neighborhood Services. Typical repairs run $150 to $600, and a standard gas tank replacement usually costs $1,300 to $2,900. See water heater replacement for details.
